Abstract : The applicability of the linear inductive energy relationship to gas-phase reactions was studied in the following series of Lewis acid-base equilibria: RCH2NH2(g) + B(CH3)3(g) reversibly yields RCH2-NH2-B(CH3)3(g), where R = CF3, HCF2, CH2OCH3, (CH2)2OCH3, H, CH3, C2H5, or n-C3H7. The dissociation pressure of the Lewis acid-base complex was measured as a function of temperature, and the pK-A's of the amine series were obtained in aqueous solution at 25C. In order to obtain the thermodynamic rate properties of the propyleneisopropanol interconversion, the rate of hydration of propylene at unit pressure was measured in 35.9-62.2 (wt.)% aqueous perchloric acid at ten degree intervals over the range 20-60C.
