Abstract : The purpose of the first part of this report is to review the present status of the theory of two and three dimensional motion of ground water with a free surface and to investigate the possibilities of applying modern instruments of calculation to the determination of the shape of the free surface, the extent of the surface of seepage and other pertinent data of importance in gravity flow systems. A comprehensive review of the existing literature is included in order that subsequent investigations may be facilitated by this report. The second part of the report is devoted to the calculation of rates of drainage of base courses by assuming approximate geometrical shapes for the free surface during the process of drainage. The various rates of drainage obtained by these approximations are compared with each other and with experimental tests conducted at the soil laboratory.
