Abstract : The negative pion-proton elastic differential cross section was measured at incident pion momenta of 2.01, 3.15, 4.13, and 4.95 BeV/c for the range of the square of the four momentum transfer of .0008 < or = absolute valued t < or = .154 (BeV/c) sq. The data extended into the region where Coulomb scattering contributions were significant. Experimental values for the real part of the forward nuclear scattering amplitude were calculated using a simple interference model for Coulomb nuclear interaction. The best values found are consistent with dispersion theory predictions in that the sign is negative, indicating destructive interference. Forward dispersion relation calculations were carried out for pion kinetic energies of 1 to 29 BeV using recent pion (=) + p total cross section results. (Author)
