Abstract : The purpose of these experiments was to study the mechanism by which magnetic flux penetrates into a type I superconductor. The specimens were in the form of disks with an axial magnetic field. The mode of penetration in cases with this geometry has been studied by DeSorbo and Healy (1961), who observed initial circumferential penetration of the flux, followed by extensive invasion of the central area of the specimen by flux bundles. Formation of such flux bundles has been considered by Faber (1958).
