Abstract : The Starfish detonation on 9 July 1962 dramatically demonstrated, by producing significant damage to several space missions, the important military implications of geomagnetically trapped electrons. Results on the spatial distribution, spectrum, angular distribution, and time history of electrons artificially injected and trapped in the earth's field as a result of not only the Starfish detonation but also some Soviet high-altitude detonations are presented.
