Abstract : By the method of labelled atoms it was shown that, in the case of thermal degradation of phenol-formaldehyde resin, the greater part of the carbon of methylene cross links of the tar takes part in the formation of graphite (coke), and is not given off in the form of gas. By the same method it was shown that the gases which contain carbon in the degradation of the tar are formed not only from the cross-link methylene groups, but also from the aromatic rings, i.e., there occurs a disconnecting of some part of the rings.
