Abstract : The past use of thermodynamically incompatible equations of state is investigated. In particular, the previous use of the Mie-Gruneisen equation of state in shock initiation problems for liquid explosives is analyzed. More careful analysis shows that theoretical calculations using this equation of state are not in satisfactory agreement with the experimental results. (Author)
