Abstract : Diurnal variation of ionospheric electron content is described for November-December, 1961, at mid-latitudes. The curve is smoothed by normalizing each single observation with respect to the corresponding 10.7 cm radiation which is an indicator of solar activity. The existence of a secondary maximum of ionization content below 1,000 km altitude for a period shortly after midnight is reported. This peak was not removed by normalization and is therefore real. The mechanism responsible for this observed downward drift at high altitudes is not known.
