Abstract : The relative rates of the photochemical addition of hydrogen bromide to 2-butene, and of the simultaneous cis-trans isomerization have been measured in the gas phase at 54C. Similar but less extensive experiments have been carried out with 1,2-dideuteroethylene. In this case, comparison of the rates with the data in the literature indicates much faster cis-trans isomerization than can be expected from the decomposition of thermalized bromoethyl radicals. Alternative explanations of the fast geometric isomerization are briefly discussed. (Author)
