Abstract : Results of computations are presented which show the changes in monthly precipitation that may occur in the Yukon basin, Alaska, after a large body of water is formed in the valley. Two methods were used. In the first method the changes in precipitation were computed by estimating the changes in precipitable water in the air caused by the new water source. The changes in precipitation are limited to the basin and are uniformly distributed downwind from the reservoir. The second method assumes that the percent change of specific humidity as a result of the reservoir is proportional to the precipitation change. Results of both methods indicate that an important increase in precipitation will occur in the southwestern quadrant of the basin during the fall months. The study also shows a small negative change in precipitation throughout the basin in late spring and early summer. This decrease as predicted by the first method is greater than that obtained by the second method. (Author)
