Abstract : The important properties of symmetric functions are presented and a systematic procedure is developed for detecting these functions. A design method is given whereby symmetric functions can be synthesized with networks which are economical and, in certain instances, minimal in the number of ternary threshold devices required. The practical consequences of these results are demonstrated by applying detection and logic design techniques to a typical digital system problem.
