Abstract : Recent electrostatic and hydrodynamic solutions to the two body problem of the forces on neighboring spheres are combined to obtain the motion of cloud droplets in a uniform electrostatic field. Collision efficiencies are obtained from the relative trajectories of one droplet with respect to another both with and without the electrostatic field. The collision efficiencies are compared to demonstrate the effect of electrostatic fields in the initial stages of droplet accretion. It is concluded that fields commonly observed in clouds can play an important role in the collision and coalescence of the droplets. (Author)
