Abstract : Potassium silyl was prepared by the reaction of disilane, Si2H6, with slight excess of potassium hydride in the presence of monoglyme, 1,2-dimethoxy ethane, over a period of 24 hours at room temperature. After removing volatile products, an excess of germyl chloride was distilled in and allowed to react with SiH3K at room temperature for fifteen minutes. Si2H6 + KH yields SiH3K + SiH4. SiH3K + GeH3Cl yields GeH3SiH3. Germyl silane, GeH3SiH3, produced, was purified by fractionating on a low-temperature column held at approximately -115C to separate GeH3SiH3 from Si2H6 and Ge2H6.
