Abstract : The feasibility of using x-ray spectra to elucidate the phenomena accompanying alloying was established. The validity of the earlier analyses was reconfirmed and several alloy systems were investigated. All results obtained so far clearly indicate that it is possible to interpret the fine structure appearing near the main absorption edge of an atom in terms of the absorbing atom's electronic structure. Once the electronic structure is known, the nature of the interatomic bonds formed can be established and the detailed short-range forces adduced. The copper-rich solid-solution region of the copper-zinc system was examined in order to substantiate the new interpretative procedure which had been previously proposed.
