Abstract : Mineral particles suspended in surface seawater in tropical and subtropical regions are composed primarily of carbonates and quartz. The particles, which are in the size range 10-50 microns, can be present in concentrations at least as high as 5 mg per liter. Organic coatings on the mineral grains prevent free interaction between the seawater and the particles; thus they do not act as nuclei for precipitation from supersaturated seawater or are they readily dissolved by undersaturated seawater. Suspended mineral particles appear to be derived from shallow water bottom sediments and from river detritus. (Author)
