Abstract : Factors affecting the acquisition and legibility of Airport Guidance Signs were studied to determine the optimum relationship between size, height and location of the signs. The studies showed the 500-foot minimum legibility requirement to be the predominant factor in size determination with a black letter on an illuminated field to be preferable from an acquisition viewpoint. A character size of 10 inches high by 8 inches wide was chosen as satisfactory for a distance of 500 feet. Using these results, two basic types of frangible signs were developed. The first consists of an air supported plastic bag with an eighteen by-forty-eight-inch translucent illuminated field on either side of the sign. The second type uses styrofoam in place of air for the support of a similar plastic bag. Because of the light transmission and outdoor weathering requirement, a Tedlar film was chosen for the plastic on both types. A number of prototypes of each design were built and tested to demonstrate the ability of the signs to withstand a 60 MPH air load while collapsing readily when hit by an airplane section. (Author)
