Abstract : In 1963, Dr. Matthew Kabrisky proposed that cross correlation is the pattern-recognition calculation of the human visual system. A discussion of the visual system demonstrates that pattern recognition might be the total function of vision. The results of past neurophysiological research are presented, and it is shown that these results substantiate the concept of the cross-correlation model. An attempt to trace nerve pathways in the visual cortex of the monkey was made; and although no important results were obtained, it showed the feasibility of neurophysiological research and recommends future projects in this area.
