Abstract : The conversion of desthiobiotin to (+)-biotin by Escherichia coli has been studied. Desthiobiotin is converted to (+)-biotin, as identified by bioautography by both growing and resting cells of a biotinless mutant strain of E. coli. The conversion is also demonstrable in resting cells of a wild-type strain of E. coli. No converting activity was found in either the mutant or wild-type strains which had been grown in the presence of exogenous (+)-biotin. Oxybiotin and desthiobiotin did not cause such repression. The results are in agreement with previous findings that biotin synthesis from glucose is repressed by (+)-biotin, and supports the role of this converting step as the functioning biosynthetic route to the vitamin.
