Abstract : A review of the relevant literature describing mathematical and empirical properties of ipsative and nonipsative measures was undertaken. This evaluation led to the explication of a simple procedure for quantifying the 'degree of ipsativity' in psychological measuring instruments. Several published research studies were evaluated against this 'index of ipsativity' leading to a conclusion that purely ipsative test instruments possess such extensive psychometric and statistical limitations that utilization of such instruments is not recommended. It is recommended that future research on the Navy Activities Preference Blank, an ipsative test, be directed toward removal of the purely ipsative properties from this test. (Author)
