Abstract : A seaworthiness analog computer has been developed to simulate the structural response of the ship hull to the hydrodynamic forces of the sea, and computations have been made to verify the feasibility, flexibility, and capability of the computer. The analog computer consists of a sea generator to generate sinusoidal seas, discrete wave trains, or random seas; a ship analog divided into 20 equally spaced segments which represent the masselastic characteristics along the ship; and a hydrodynamic force generator divided into nine sections, four of which are capable of introducing nonlinear hydrodynamic forces. The output of the ship analog is fed back into the hydrodynamic force generator to produce the dynamic interaction between the ship and the sea. Computations made to determine the response of an aircraft carrier to a specific wave train agreed very well with the actual measurements made on the ship. It is believed that the computer can be of great assistance in ship structure design. (Author)
