Abstract : A strong ESR signal was observed in 2, 3, 5-triphenyl formazan (I) which could not be explained by the compound's structural formula. Subsequent studies revealed that the signal resulted from an unascertainable free radical impurity. The same impurity appeared regardless of the reduction method used during the preparation of I. Several implications are discussed.
