Abstract : Finite dimensional control of a class of linear symmetric hyperbolic systems of partial differential equations is considered. The control criterion is minimization of the energy of the system at a given time T after the exercise of control is begun. It is shown that the optimal control exists and satisfies a maximum principle. A type of normality condition is discussed. It is shown that a class of boundary value control problems can be treated in this setting. Some numerical procedures are suggested. (Author)
