Abstract : Thermal conductivity and thermoelectric power of solids were investigated at low temperatures. Photonassisted scattering of electrons by the impurity atoms was first studied and the electrical resistivity of a number of gold alloys was measured from 2-40?K. Experiments demonstrated the reality of resistance due to phononassisted inelastic impurity scattering and verified the theoretical magnitude and temperature dependence of the effect. Alloys having localized lattice modes were considered and a precise determination of the temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity of gold is given. Electrical and thermal conductivities and thermoelectric power were studied in the semi-metals of tin-telluride and platinum-antimonide. The role of resonance scattering of phonons in the thermal conductivity of glasses is discussed. (Author)
