Abstract : Monolayers as radioactive sources have the following outstanding qualities: (1) The radioactive atoms are spread completely homogeneously over the emitting surface. (2) The number of active atoms depends only on the area of these layers and on the isotope abundance. (3) Monolayers are 'weightless' sources of 'zero thickness' with insignificant self-absorption. (4) These sources can be made with any desired activity for a number of elements: carbon-14, hydrogen-3, phosphorous-32, and others. They are easily reproducible and relatively permanent. Usage of radioactive monolayers as standards in assay work and for dosage determinations by means of G-M counters and radioautography is recommended. (Author)
