Abstract : Cast gun metal plates 1 in. x 8 in. x 6 in. of composition 88 Cu - 8 Sn - 4 Zn, containing defective areas, were investigated by radiography and tested under hydrostatic pressure. After machining metal from both sides of the castings, radiographs were taken and the castings pressure tested at the new thicknesses. The plates were divided into four major classifications by the appearance of the radiographs of the one-inch section. Radiographs of castings that were pressure-tight and castings which leaked are shown. It was concluded that castings intended for critical use should be radiographed as well as pressure tested.
