Abstract : As a step towards a definitive solution of the collision efficiency problem of two spheres falling in a viscous medium, L. M. Hocking's unpublished Ph.D. thesis (University of London, 1958) is examined. The resulting infinite sets of equations that must be solved for the forces on the spheres are found to be correct. This Memorandum shows, however, that Hocking's solution of these equations have large errors if the spheres are close together. A suitable method for solving the equations is developed, as in a procedure for accurately determining the errors. (Author)
