Abstract : The possibility of using light as a quantitative reagent in chemical reactions was investigated. Photolytic reactions with a reproducible quantum yield and whose products are generally useful analytical reagents, e.g., oxidizing or reducing agents, were studied. The photochemical generation of hydrogen peroxide from solutions of various organic acids was investigated for quantitative interest. It was found that dissolved oxygen was a required reactant and determined directly the amount of peroxide formed. Photochemical generation of reactant was used for the photolytic determination of trace amounts of organic material in water. The technique proved to be extremely sensitive. A list of resulting publications is included. (Author)
