Abstract : The presentation is part of an effort to integrate observations with the findings obtained by other investigators. This integration of data resulted in the formation of several hypotheses which appear to provide an explanation of some of the mechanisms responsible for the relationship between secretion rate and composition. An attempt was made to limit the presentation to studies conducted on human subjects. The paucity of information relative to humans made it necessary to include certain animal studies. Wherever possible, these animal studies were limited to findings which appear to be germane to the function of both human and animal glands.
