Abstract : This paper describes a method of block adjustment for heights, programmed at the National Research Council. The method consists in polynomial transformation of strips and includes corrections for height curvature and for torsion. For the computation of the transformation formulas, a direct solution of the system of normal equations is employed. The program is used in combination with a program for three-dimensional strip adjustment and a program for planimetric block adjustment which utilize conformal transformations. The program has been used in the height adjustment for the International Test on Block Adjustment. For each of the three sets of measurements made at the N.R.C., several adjustments have been performed with various degrees of the polynomials. The results are listed in tables and analyzed. For the 1 : 80,000 photography, the mean square values of the residuals at ground-control points range from 3.8 to 7.2 m. (Author)
