Abstract : The report is concerned with theoretical stress distributions on spherical cavities in homogeneous, isotropic, elastic media. The medium in this solution is considered to be infinite but the results are applicable to a semiinfinite body, i.e., one having a free surface, provided the cavity is sufficiently far below the free surface. In the discussion of the results it will be shown that the depth to the top of the sphere may be as small as a diameter of the sphere. The basic solutions developed are for cavities in uniform stress fields in the coordinate axial directions. The stress fields being the stresses existing in the medium in the absence of the cavity.
