Abstract : A program was initiated to determine the factors important in controlling the energy coupling between a detonating explosive and a metallic liner. A number of preliminary experiments using a slab explosive-liner geometry were completed with several different explosives combined with four different liner materials. These combinations were chosen as representing a wide range in the impedance match between the explosive and liner. Additionally, the explosives used in these experiments had different critical diameters for sustained detonations--implying different reaction zone structures-thus permitting some estimate of the effects of zone structure on the energy transfer from explosive to the liner. The results of these preliminary investigations are presented in this report.
