Abstract : Since the oscillatory behavior of the interband Faraday effect was observed in Ge at room temperature, much interest has been focussed on how the Coulomb interaction between the excited electron and the hole would influence the line shapes of the rotatory dispersion. In order that this problem might be answered quantitatively with some experimental evidence, it was necessary to measure the rotatory dispersion for a single energy state of a direct exciton in a pair of nondegenerate conduction and valence bands. Experimental results are presented on the Faraday rotation and the Voigt effect of the direct excitons at gamma points in Ge near liquid helium temperature. Good agreement was obtained between the experimental results and those calculated for the Faraday rotation in the photon energy range up to 0.900 ev. (Author)
