Abstract : It is shown how to calculate which irreducible representations are present in any two-phonon state even when the individual phonons are degenerate; and how, using polarization effects, to determine experimentally which Raman active irreducible representations are present in the two-phonon state responsible for any Van Hove singularity in the two-phonon Raman dispersion curve.
