Abstract : The first useful measurements of parallel-pumped instability (PPI) thresholds in metals were made on vacuum-deposited films and rolled foils of the nickel: iron alloy, permalloy, using a pulse-power modulation of the usual electron paramagnetic resonance field modulation signal recovery technique. It is shown that PPI signals can be observed in films thinner than microwave skin depth, and in polycrystalline foils many skin depths thick. Relaxation rates of spin waves are determined.
