Abstract : The temporal development or dynamics of a quantum mechanical system is usually described in terms of a semigroup of unitary operators. In any more general axiomatic formulation of quantum mechanics a similar assumption would likely be made. The energy observable is defined as the infinitesimal generator of this semigroup. Also, the momentum observables are defined as the infinitesimal generators of semigroups corresponding to rigid motions in configuration space. Basic results are derived concerning semigroups of bounded simultaneous derivables.
