Abstract : A force balance analog is a new tool for solving any flexible cable system problem that can be instantaneously represented by a balance of static forces. The analog is capable of reproducing computer program solutions to within =5 percent for cable tensions and physical geometry. The force balance analog is simply a vertical board display of a simulated nonconcurrent, coplanar force system with reduced force and geometric scales. Assumptions are developed for the analog based on a classical static analysis of a free rigid body system. Design features of the analog are described, and design criteria is presented for choosing realistic vertical ocean velocity profiles simulating surface and abyssal circulations, and cable parameters.
