Abstract : In view of the appearance of a number of foreign papers where adhesion of polymer adhesives is treated in terms of wetting the present communication discusses the basic principles of the thermodynamics of adhesion. It has been pointed out that there is no direct relation between wetting and adhesion of a polymer to a solid. A critical discussion has been made of the theory of Sharp and Schonhorn who consider adhesion as due to a spreading of the polymer adhesive along the surface of a substrate and it has been shown that a purely thermodynamic approach to the adhesion of polymers to solids is invalid.
