Abstract : A detailed study of the non-condensables released from sea water under simulated and actual distilling conditions was made to provide necessary data for development of efficient venting techniques. Experimental work on a simulated vapor compression unit constituted the major portion of the investigation. Material on 200 GPH VC and flash evaporation processes was added for comparison. The relation between the amount of non-condensables released and the residence time of the water in the evaporator is discussed. The correlation of carbonate ion hydrolysis, residence time, and carbon dioxide evolution is shown to be a function of the feed to blowdown flow ratio.
