Abstract : The equations pertinent to the interaction of an electron beam and a stationary plasma with an electromagnetic wave are derived. The purpose is to investigate, on a smallsignal basis, the generation of harmonics in a microwave beamplasma system. The BoltzmannVlasov equation, with a constant viscous damping term to account for electronneutral collisions, is used and all field quantities are expanded in a power series of an arbitrary expansion parameter E. The coefficients of each power of E are then expanded as harmonic functions in time whose amplitudes are slowly varying functions of position. An approximate set of equations is then given which in principle can be solved by the method of successive approximations. A device for studying amplification and harmonic generation in a beamplasma system is in the initial design stages. A plasma column contained in a glass tube through which an electron beam is to be passed will ultimately be used. The coupling to the beamplasma system will be accomplished by means of elliptic cavity couplers. These couplers will be movable for maximum coupling to each of the various harmonic components. The input impedance for a proposed elliptic cavity coupler has been calculated and is presented in this report. (Author)
