Abstract : The Medical Volunteer Program at Edgewood Arsenal is described. The dual objective of the program is to improve selection procedures and to study a large group of normal individuals comprising a cross section of US Army personnel. The demographic characteristics of 421 individuals selected as medical volunteers are tabulated. Variables include means and frequency distributions of age, education, family background, intellectual level, and military occupation. The report includes selection procedures, estimates of rejection and acceptance rates, and individual volunteer performance. Although no hypotheses are formulated, as a final step, a number of rejectees and acceptees and poor volunteers and very good volunteers could be matched according to the variables listed above. The next interim report will compare accepted volunteers and rejected individuals. (Author)
