Abstract : The Rayleigh-Ritz method is used to obtain the governing equations for the buckling and postbuckling behavior of prolate spheroidal shells. The buckling displacements are assumed to be confined to a shallow cap, and a coordinate transformation is employed to simplify the integration of the energy expression. Graphical results are presented for several cases that demonstrate the effect of varying the eccentricity of the generating ellipse of the shell.
