Abstract : The purpose of the study was to evaluate some of the causes that may interfere with doctor-patient communication: (1) Vocabulary knowledge of 'common' medical terms on the part of patients. Such variables as socio-economic status, origin (urban or rural), education, age and sex will be considered. (2) Degree of understanding by both doctor and patient, to be measured by means of separate interviews that will be checked against the tape-recorded doctorpatient interview. (3) Presentation of self by both doctor and patient during the medical interview and its influence in 'rapport'. (4) Social distance between doctor and patient and degree of social mobility of each.
