Abstract : A two stage experiment concerned with the neurochemical effects of visual deprivation was conducted. In Stage I rats were enucleated at 15 days of age and sacrificed at either 30, 50, 75, or 100 days. Stage 2 research involved removing the eyes at 100 days and sacrificing at 115, 135, 160, or 185 days of age. A littermate normal was housed with each enucleate. No differences were present in the visual cortex in Stage 1 but the control animals had greater protein values and RNA/DNA and protein/DNA ratios in Stage 2. Several other significant results occurred and are discussed. The period of greatest cellular activity was at 50 days or 75 days in all tissues. (Author)
