Abstract : The effect of the reversible martensitic transformation on the mechanical properties of a copper-aluminumnickel alloy was studied. Stress-strain parameters were investigated from -300F to 500F. Elastic strains as high as 24.0% were achieved. Mechanical hysteresis was found in the martensite phase but non-existent in the beta phase if certain temperature-strain variables were not exceeded. Fatigue life was determined for both phases and found to be approximately 100 times better than annealed brass at 2.0% total strain. A survey of the literature revealed additional characteristics of the transformation found in this class of alloys, such as the variation in elastic constants, driving force for the reaction and the modes of elastic flow.
