Abstract : Extracellular microelectrode recordings were made of the activity of single neurons in the olfactory bulbs of anesthetized cats, rabbits, and dogs. In all three species, brief exposure to x-rays (250 KVP; exposure rate, 1 R per second) produced an alteration in firing rate in some olfactory bulb neurons. The response to irradiation was usually an increase in firing rate, but in a few cases a depression in firing rate was observed. (Author)
