Abstract : Condensation of vapor and vapor-gas mixtures in supersonic nozzle flows is discussed. The limiting conditions of equilibrium and frozen flow, and the thermodynamics of the collapse of the supersaturated flow are demonstrated. New results are presented on the nature of the condensate produced by homogeneous nucleation of water vapor in inert air. It is deduced from experiments that the condensate is finely dispersed after equilibrium is attained. Study of these extremely small clusters may shed new light on nucleation theory, surface free energy and other aspects of phase transition at low temperature. (Author)
