Abstract : Data taken in 1965 confirm previous measurements made with a conventional light source in 1962 and with a laser source in 1964. The data continue to indicate a difference in the propagation characteristics of the two sources. This difference is ascribed to the different beam geometries, but it disappears when an integrating sphere with a 4 inch aperture is used for a receiver and a beam compression device is employed. Thus the laser and conventional sources have similar gross propagation properties although the data still indicate the presence of scattering effects. Thus the range of underwater laser devices may be longer than anticipated. The data also indicate that appreciable portions of the irradiance is far from the axis. (Author)
