Abstract : This preliminary investigation was conducted to help resolve the controversy over whether or not a helicopter in combat can increase its safety by performing an evasive maneuver after detecting a target but before firing on it. The result showed that, at least in one situation, the evasive maneuver can give the helicopter some advantage, but not for the reasons hypothesized. It was concluded that the problem is sufficiently complex to warrant additional research. (Author)
