Abstract : The application of hydrostatic pressure is more effective in destroying the Frank-Wen clusters in bulk liquid water and in breaking up the local water structure in the hydration atmospheres of ionic species in solution than is the application of temperature. In addition, as a consequence of electrostriction, the application of pressure increases the dissociation of weak electrolytes such as magnesium sulphate. While having relatively little effect on the velocity of sound in sea water, these processes are responsible for the absorption of acoustic energy in the sea. (Author)
