Abstract : Experimental techniques have been developed for producing uniform water drops from 25 to 500 microns in diameter. The droplets are formed from a pressure -modulated water jet as it passes through a tiny orifice. Orifices with diameters as small as 20 microns have been used. The water pressure is modulated with a piezoelectric ceramic transducer oscillated at approximately 160,000 cps for the smallest droplets. The harmonic vibration of the transducer provides a stream of reproducible droplets at controllable intervals. The drop generator was designed for use in studying the coalescence of cloud and fog-sized water droplets under various environmental conditions, and high-speed photographic techniques were developed to measure coalescence delay times.
